In 1559 Margherita Paleologa Marchesa del Monferrato, wife of Federico II Gonzaga of Mantua, granted Fontanile the right to hold a weekly market.
This is because Fontanile was the seat of the Senate of the Marquisate, from 1557 to 1559.

The municipal project "I muri raccontano..." (The walls tell...) is a major camouflage of the town created by Luigi Amerio: through pictorial art, the walls and house facades represent Fontanile's past from the Middle Ages to the present day.
